Significance of Muharram:
A Holy Month:
Muharram is one of the four holy months in Islam that are referred to in the Qur’an. It’s also commonly called “the month of Allah”, and Muslims are urged to enhance worship during the month.
Why 10 Muharram Matters:
Ashura is significant as it commemorates various important events in Islamic history:
- Prophet Musa (AS) and Bani Israel were delivered from Pharaoh.
- The Ark of Prophet Nuh (AS) came to rest on Mount Judi.
- Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was rescued from the fire.
- Imam Hussain (RA) martyred at Karbala.
- Prophet Yunus (AS) was safely released from the belly of the fish.
- Prophet Suleman (AS) was granted kingship over all creation.
- Prophets Idris (AS) and Isa (AS) were raised to the heavens.
- Prophet Ayub (AS) was cured of his illness.

Fasting on 10 Muharram:
Fasting on Ashura was observed even before Ramadan became obligatory. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ promoted fasting on the 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th to differentiate from other religions.
Virtue: Fasting on 10 Muharram erases the past year’s sins (Sahih Hadith).

Commemorating Imam Hussain (RA):
Shia and Sufi Muslims honor the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (RA) through mourning, Zikr, and recitation of the Quran. Majalis (assemblies) emphasize the teachings of Karbala and Islam’s unity.
Common Misconceptions:
Some of the cultural rituals associated with 10 Muharram are not supported by valid Hadith. Islamic practice today must still be based on Qur’an and Sunnah.
10 Muharram in Pakistan (2025):
On 10 Muharram 2025 in Pakistan, it is anticipated that it will fall on Saturday, 5th July, while public holidays will be on 9th and 10th Muharram. Mosques and Imambargahs provide sermons, processions, and community lunches.
Ziyarat Ashura:
Ziyarat Ashura (زیارت عاشورا) is a powerful Shia devotional prayer attributed to Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (AS), recited especially on the Day of Ashura (10th of Muharram) to express love for Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions, and to condemn the oppressors who martyred him in Karbala.
Conclusion:
10 Muharram is a time of introspection, fasting, giving, and remembrance. It is a reminder for Muslims about divine mercy, past tests, and ultimate sacrifice at Karbala. By bringing back the Sunnah and celebrating this day sincerely, believers aspire for closeness with Allah and the Prophet ﷺ.
